“A great day is anticipated, and by attending we’ll all follow the ‘Path of Entrusting — Reciting the Nembutsu,'” said a spokeswoman for the coordinating committee.
Focusing on the theme “Path of Entrusting — Recite the Nembutsu,” the new year will be welcomed with a celebration hosted by the Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Hilo Hongwanji Mission.
The event, co-chaired by Lillie Tsuchiya and Ellen Curry, will take place in the Sangha Hall. After opening remarks at 10:30 a.m. by emcee Kay Yonemori, prayers will be led by acting rimban, the Rev. Bruce Nakamura, assisted by the Rev. Yuika Hasebe and the Rev. Shingo Furusawa.
Assisting as advisor will be Motoe Tada, a long-time church member who will also be the featured speaker.
Tada was born in Wainaku and attended schools in Hilo. After graduating from high school, she left to join her brothers in California to further her education. In her later years she worked as office manager and remembers being affiliated with the BWA as far back as the 1960s as a junior member when the BWA was known as the Fujinkai.
Her parents had a great influence in her religious upbringing and instilled in her the importance of supporting her temple.
BWA president Ellen Okano will conduct a short business meeting and new members will be introduced by Lani Yamami.
After a catered lunch, there will be a program featuring local entertainers.
All guests attending will receive as a memento note cards designed by Ichiko Murakami and prepared by her Gifts Committee using rare Oriental stationery.
Tickets for the event will be on sale in the church office through the end of the month.
